Mr. Stone's Notes for Chapter 5

1. How is the movie significantly different than than the book? Juana trying to throw the pearl into the sea occurs around minute fifty in the movie. In the movie Kino sees two men who look like they will attack him.  He is able to see them.  He appears to kill both of them. In the movie, Juana attempts to use a rock to assist Kino in killing the men by the beach.  She does not do this in the book. Kino sweetly declines Juana's pleas to get rid of the pearl in the movie as opposed to his anger in the book. The chronology of the book is broken in the movie.  A scene with the doctor is inserted at this point. Juana is not shown finding the Pearl. Their house is not shown being burned at this point.  They go a compadre's house and he gives them materials to flee.  Juan Tomas is not named in the movie. In the movie, the family attempts to leave the village in the boat and it sinks barely after they have entered. Kino is not shown finding a ho...

Practicing Rhetorical Moves

Students completed fifteen minutes of Membean vocabulary drills and wrote a response to Jean Twenge's article using one of the rhetorical moves from "They Say/I Say." No Homework

Last Day for Creating a Rough Draft of "On Being an Adult" Essay

Students spent the first ten minutes of class completing vocabulary drills on Membean. They had the opportunity to retake the first vocabulary test if they missed any questions on their first attempt. Students spent the remainder of the period finishing their first draft of "On Being an Adult." Students who finished early were encouraged to spend time on Membean since Senior Composition will not meet on Friday due to the SA picnic and beach vespers. Homework:  Complete your rough draft if not completed during class time.

Teens Growing Up Slower

Read Jean Twenge's article on "Why today's teens are taking longer to grow up."  Will be discussing this article in class.

Drafting On Being an Adult

Membean:  10 Minutes Students worked on drafting their essay "On Being an Adult."  Mr. Stone checked definition diagrams and the beginning of "On Being an Adult" drafts. Students spent the period drafting their "On Being an Adult" essays. No Homework

More of Chapter 1 of They Say/I Say and On Being Adult

Tuesday 19 September 2017 Students spent the first ten minutes practicing their vocabulary on Membean.com. The class continued reading Chapter One of Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein's They Say/I Say (last paragraph on page 19 through page 23).  Mr. Stone pointed out the index of templates at the back of the book. Students began drafting their essay on being adult.  Mr. Stone encouraged them to try one of the templates from They Say/I Say. Students printed out their progress for the period and placed it in the in-box for Period 3. Homework:  If you haven't finished the definition template, you should consider yourself behind and get it completed.

Chapter 1 of They Say, I Say

Students spent the first ten minutes completing vocabulary drills on Membean.com. The class then began reading together the first chapter of Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein's "They Say/I Say":  The Moves that Matter in Persuasive Writing  (17-19). Students spent the remainder of class time completing their definition diagram for the word adult . Mr. Stone collected the signature sheet or the syllabus from students who had it signed. Homework:  Complete the definition diagram if not completed in class and get the signature sheet for the syllabus completed if not submitted today.
