LLA Senior Composition

Students typed their description of an item from campus with a dominant impression, using MLA format. They enrolled in Membean. Homework:  Complete twenty minutes of vocabulary drills on Membean before coming to class on Friday.

Devotional Text:  Mark 11:25-26 Students took class time to locate a person, object, or place they wished to describe.  They photographed it and took notes on their observations.  Students began drafting a description with an emphasis on one dominant impression. Homework: Complete description with a dominant impression.  Minimum length:  1 page handwritten

Devotional Text:  Matthew 6:14-15 Mr. Stone gave notes on descriptive writing techniques: naming detailing comparing concrete abstract specific The class also took notes on types of imagery: visual auditory olfactory tactile gustatory kinetic The class analyzed the first paragraph of Allison Jay's "Back at the Ranch."  They highlighted the verbs in pink and the nouns in green.  Mr. Stone emphasized the dominance of naming in description and the proportion of naming to detailing and comparing. To identify detailing, students used yellow to highlight adjectives and orange to highlight adverbs. Mr. Stone introduced the idea of time markers.  Students used a red pen to identify the time markers in the first paragraph of "Back at the Ranch." No homework was given.

Thursday 24 August 2017 Devotional Text:  Philippians 1:6 Students reviewed their list of pivotal moments and shared several with their classmates. Mr. Stone read Jay Allison's "Back at the Ranch" to the class and discussed Allison's use of concrete and specific words. No homework

Wednesday 23 August 2017 Students were to write a five paragraph essay discussing what they believe to be the most difficult reality of adolescence. Homework:  Make a list of ten pivotal moments in your life--moments when your life took a turn.
