Devotional Text:  Matthew 6:14-15

Mr. Stone gave notes on descriptive writing techniques:

naming
detailing
comparing

concrete
abstract
specific

The class also took notes on types of imagery:

visual
auditory
olfactory
tactile
gustatory
kinetic

The class analyzed the first paragraph of Allison Jay's "Back at the Ranch."  They highlighted the verbs in pink and the nouns in green.  Mr. Stone emphasized the dominance of naming in description and the proportion of naming to detailing and comparing.

To identify detailing, students used yellow to highlight adjectives and orange to highlight adverbs.

Mr. Stone introduced the idea of time markers.  Students used a red pen to identify the time markers in the first paragraph of "Back at the Ranch."

No homework was given.

Tuesday 19 September 2017 Students spent the first ten minutes practicing their vocabulary on Membean.com. The class continued reading Chapter One of Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein's They Say/I Say (last paragraph on page 19 through page 23).  Mr. Stone pointed out the index of templates at the back of the book. Students began drafting their essay on being adult.  Mr. Stone encouraged them to try one of the templates from They Say/I Say. Students printed out their progress for the period and placed it in the in-box for Period 3. Homework:  If you haven't finished the definition template, you should consider yourself behind and get it completed.

Chapter 1 of They Say, I Say

Students spent the first ten minutes completing vocabulary drills on Membean.com. The class then began reading together the first chapter of Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein's "They Say/I Say":  The Moves that Matter in Persuasive Writing  (17-19). Students spent the remainder of class time completing their definition diagram for the word adult . Mr. Stone collected the signature sheet or the syllabus from students who had it signed. Homework:  Complete the definition diagram if not completed in class and get the signature sheet for the syllabus completed if not submitted today.
