Definition Diagram

Friday 15 September 2017

Continuing in our discussion of what it means to be an adult, the class began creating a definition diagram to gather material about the word adult.

Students folded a white piece of 8 1/2" x 11" paper to created eight wedges.  Students labled each of the eight sections:

dictionary definition/genus differentia definition

synonyms

antonyms

personal definition

negative definitions

etymology/word history/word origins

quotations

important facts

Mr. Stone gave described additonal categories that students could include on the back:

stipulative definition/designated definition

specialized definitions

anecdotes

comparative definitions

Mr. Stone discussed the pros and cons of paper and electronic resources.  He showed copies of Bartlett's Familar Quotations, The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations, Webster's Word Histories, and the Arcade Dictionary of Word Origins.

Mr. Stone reminded students about the importance in the writing process of gathering together more material than needed for the final product to allow yourself options.

Students had time in class to begin completing the diagram.

There is no official homework over the weekend; however, Mr. Stone suggested talking to older family members and friends about what it means to be an adult.
